Outdoor Benches FAQ's
Should I Buy an Outdoor Bench or an Outdoor Swing?
An outdoor bench and swing are both excellent additions to any patio or backyard setup. Choosing between the two depends on your needs, preferences, space, and design aesthetic. If you like the idea of a swing but don’t have a place to suspend a traditional unit, consider a glider option, like Ash & Ember’s Cascade Grade A Teak Glider Bench.
How Much Space Do I Need for an Outdoor Bench or Swing?
The space you need for an outdoor bench or swing depends on the size of the unit you get and how you plan to use it. Here are some guidelines to help you choose. For an outdoor bench allow at least 20-26 inches of bench space for each adult (e.g., a 48-inch bench would comfortably seat two adults). Add 12-14 inches on each side of the bench. Add 24-36 inches in front and back for walking (unless you place the bench against a wall). If the bench will be part of a dining setup, factor in the size of the table and space for people to get in and out. For an outdoor swing allow at least 20-26 inches of seating space for each adult and add 48-60 inches in front of the swing for a clear path of travel. Add 36-48 inches behind the swing for a clear path of travel and clear the swing arc so nothing is in the way. Factor in the space necessary for hanging hardware (i.e., the frame). If suspending the swing from an existing structure, make sure the structure can handle the weight of the unit, the weight of the people, and the movement of the swing itself.
Why Should I Consider a Teak Outdoor Bench or Swing?
Weather-Resistant: Teak is naturally resistant to moisture, warping, cracking, and insect damage, so a teak bench or swing will withstand sun, rain, snow, and harsh weather conditions without needing constant protection. Low Maintenance: You can oil or stain your furniture to keep the original golden-brown finish, or you can leave it to weather naturally to a silvery patina. Either way, teak is especially low maintenance. Long Lifespan: With proper care, a teak bench or swing can last for decades and provide long-term savings compared to replacing less durable furniture several times.
How Should I Care for My Teak Outdoor Bench or Swing?
Leaving your teak outdoor bench or swing untreated allows the wood to weather naturally and develop a beautiful silver-gray patina. But if you prefer the golden brown color of new teak, simply apply a high-quality teak oil once or twice a year. For added protection place your furniture in a well-ventilated area with partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods of time (the sun can cause excessive drying and cracking). During harsh winters, store your bench or swing indoors or cover it with a weatherproof tarp. Clean spills and stains promptly with soapy water. Remove leaves, debris, and bird droppings to prevent staining and mildew.
