Teak Furniture Care: Protect What You've Invested In

Teak is known for its natural outdoor durability and minimal care requirements. Left untreated it weathers to a consistent silver-gray patina that blends with many outdoor spaces and maintains its integrity through seasons of use. However, preserving its original color can be easily achieved with a simple care routine.

Choosing the Right Products for Your Teak

Ash & Ember’s teak care collection includes cleaners, brighteners, oils, and sealers formulated specifically for Grade A teak. Designed to work with the wood’s dense grain and natural oil content, these products remove surface buildup, refresh the appearance of the wood, and maintain a more consistent finish over time. A few minutes of effort each season can keep your pieces looking intentional and ensures the wood keeps its color for decades.

What's in the Teak Care Collection

  • Teak Cleaners: Remove dirt, algae, and surface grime without stripping the wood's natural oils. Safe for use on all Grade A teak furniture.
  • Teak Brighteners: Restore the original golden tone after graying or oxidation. Used after cleaning, before sealing or oiling.
  • Teak Sealers: Lock in color and provide a barrier against UV exposure and moisture. A sealer preserves the current tone without adding a glossy finish.
  • Teak Oils: Penetrate the wood to enrich color and highlight the natural grain. Best for owners who prefer a warm, natural look and are comfortable reapplying seasonally.
  • Purpose-Built Formulas: Every product in this collection is designed specifically for teak's unique density and oil content, not repurposed from general wood care lines.

FAQs

Yes. Graying is a natural response to UV exposure and does not affect the wood's structural integrity. The silver-gray patina is purely cosmetic. If you prefer the original golden color, a teak cleaner and brightener can help restore it, and a sealer or oil will help maintain the tone between applications.

If you're using teak oil to maintain color, one to two applications per year is typical, depending on sun exposure and climate. Furniture in full sun or coastal environments may benefit from more frequent application. If you're using a teak sealer instead of oil, one application per year is generally sufficient.

Teak oil penetrates the wood and enhances the natural grain and color from within. It provides a warm, natural look but needs to be reapplied more frequently. Teak sealer sits on the surface and creates a UV-resistant barrier that locks in color. While sealer lasts longer between applications, it produces a slightly different finish than oil.

It's not recommended. High-pressure water can damage the wood grain and raise fibers on the surface, creating a rough texture. A soft-bristled brush with a teak wood cleaner and warm water is the safest and most effective cleaning method.

Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (220-grit) can help if the surface has become rough or raised. For routine maintenance, sanding is usually unnecessary. Cleaning with a teak cleaner and brightener is enough to prepare the surface for oil or sealer application.
